The wellness of children is a bellwether of the wellness of a community. The Child Welfare Committee of the New Hanover Disaster Coalition works to address the unique needs of children (ages 0-18) before, during, and after a disaster, and is especially focused on planning for future events.
During and after disasters, children have unique and specific needs. Helping them return to regular routine after a disaster can improve a child’s recovery and allow the families to get back to normal quickly. Every day in the U.S., 69 million children are separated from their families while they attend child care facilities, schools, and after school programs. The Resiliency Task Force and the New Hanover Disaster Coalition are serving as a the initiatives’ implementing partners and we want to make sure that the organizations that serve the children of New Hanover County are prepared to meet their needs.
New Hanover County is a participating county in the Resilient Children/Resilient Communities Initiative, a community-based model of child-focused disaster preparedness, led by the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University’s Earth Institute. Currently the initiative is in it’s second phase, focusing on post-disaster recovery by learning from the experiences of communities affected by recent hurricanes, including Hurricane Florence. This project aims to create more resources and relationships to help make children more resilient to future disasters. In partnership with the RCRC Communities, the Resilient Children/Resilient Communities Initiative analyzed, recommended and implemented procedures, training, and guidance to help build child-focused community resilience to disasters. The RCRC Toolbox is a dynamic collection of resources developed and curated throughout this initiative for the benefit of those working to make our communities and our children more resilient to disasters. This collection of tools and resources should be shared widely with communities across the US and its territories.
